Deliveries 28th September 2017

A lot of deliveries have arrived today!

The slippers are another part of my treats from winning that lovely cheque earlier this month. I’ve had both cheap and expensive ones in the past and have found I love these from Shoe Zone the most. They’re lovely and comfy, the bootie slippers are really warm and they all last a good while even with me walking miles in them (indoors) each day!

The socks I purchased via eBay and are to make the slippers last a bit longer than they would otherwise and they look cute too!

The Barny Ranger Discovery Diary I won via an on pack competition for a friend, I’ll be passing this along to her next time we manage to meet up!

The Brockmans Gin D won a few weeks ago via the ‘Press to Win’ app on their Facebook page. He’ll be pleased when he gets home to see this has arrived 🙂

I also have a test product being delivered later but decided to do this post without it as I’m not totally sure I could have shown you all anyway 🙂

The Harbour Master by Daniel Pembrey

The Harbour Master

The premise of the book sounded really interesting and so when I was offered a copy to read and review I jumped at the chance as I have been reading more crime books from new to me authors recently and been having a great time with them. The first thing I have to say about this book is that I only finished reading it because I had agreed to write a review on it, had it been a book I had sourced myself, I would have given up a few chapters in for a variety of reasons.

The main problem I found with this book was that the author gave far too much information with far too little detail. He failed to paint a picture of the scene’s he was setting so that instead of inhabiting the book and experiencing the story as I read it, I could only read it due to having to google every few pages (paragraphs at the start of the book) to find out the missing details of how things look or are geographically located.

As I started to read the book I felt that maybe I was at fault for not knowing Amsterdam well, I didn’t even know there was a port there until I read this book. But I soon realised that the fault wasn’t with me, there just is not enough detail written in the book for it to be an easy read for anyone who doesn’t know the area’s it’s set in well. An example excerpt would be:

“Willemspark lay to the south-west of us, a little outside the canal belt. Flanked by a large, popular park, the houses there are substantial and finely detailed, the streets quiet.”

This is all the detail about one of the locations that Henk visits and returned to a few times, it’s hard to imagine what these houses looked like in any way with this little detail and yet that was all that was given which made it impossible to imagine the setting if you are unfamiliar with the location. When I read a novel I do not want to have to head to google every other page to find out what something is or how it looks. It defeats the escapism that I expect from reading a book and ruins the vision of the words that runs through my mind whilst I read something that has been well written.

This isn’t my only issue with this book. That it was broken up into 3 books within would have been nice to know but this information was sadly lacking as was any ‘real’ investigative work. Those who are guilty, or not as the case may be, seems to be decided by those in power up the food chain in this world and not by any evidence. We never see much of the leg work that is involved in solving cases, just hunches, wrong turns and secretive meetings where everyone seems to be more interested in furthering their career or feathering their nest than the crimes involved and I found this hugely disappointing.

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Deliveries 18th August 2016

I spoke too soon yesterday about books didn’t I? Oh well, at least these 2 are both from Goodreads as well so I can still keep yesterdays at the top of the pile …… then again, these sound so good too, Oh decisions decisions, I’ll just have to go with reading them in the order they arrived!

All the other goodies are the Gastro Alfresco good box that I won from a competition with Country Living. There are some lovely goodies in there for both of us to share 😀

Deliveries 17th August 2016

Some rather exciting post today, well, it’s exciting for me anyway 😀

The Bose SoundLink Mini II has come from a competition which ran in Arrowwords earlier this year, I received a letter from them last month letting me know so I’ve been waiting (im)patiently for it to arrive since then. I am rather excited to see how this sounds as it’s our first bit of Bose kit, hopefully not our last if it lives up to expectations 😀

The book has come from a Goodreads giveaway and sounds like a really good read, I’ve put it next on my to-read pile, hopefully nothing will come between now and me finishing my current book to displace it!

Deliveries 18th Jun 2016

This is another of the books I’ve been lucky enough to win from recently.

Unlike the other books I have received recently (and loved reading) this one is not part of a long running series so I’m not in danger of adding to my huge ‘To-Read’ pile by reading it. The Night Book does sound interesting and I think I’m going to be starting this one later today since I’m not reading anything right now, great timing on delivery then 😀

Deliveries 15th June 2016

I received this book after winning it in one of the Goodreads giveaways.

After all the crime and vampire books I’ve been reading lately it’ll be a nice change to read something romantic again and this one did interest me.

Like the last one I won, this is a part of a set so if I get on with the writing style and enjoy it I’m going to be adding a whole lot of new books to my wishlist again!

Deliveries 11th June 2016

I was lucky enough to win a copy of Patricia Cornwell’s book ‘Flesh and Blood’ via a Goodreads giveaway. I’ve not read any of her books yet but have developed a taste for crime fiction over the last few months so I am keen to try this out and if I enjoy it I will have to look into getting the rest of the Kay Scarpetta books of which this seems to be the 22nd! At least that would keep me out of trouble for a while 😉

As a nice surprise the book also came with a lovely t-shirt and bag, I didn’t know these were included as the giveaway didn’t say they were so it was lovely to open the package and find them this morning 😀
